Target GenX: Congress Launches Website For Tech Savvy Youth, Bansal Writes Own Blog
By ugesh sarkar, Section Congress on Mass Media
Posted on Tue Mar 31, 2009 at 02:13:06 AM EST
The term `geri' now has a new meaning. In an attempt to connect with the net-savvy youth and highlight the significance of voting, the Congress, on its website launched on Monday, describes `geri' as an acronym meaning -- `Giving Elections Real Interest'.
The website www.pawanbansalforchd.com introduces Bansal as the Congress candidate from the city. His achievements, political graph, some never seen before pictures and information about his family are also included. The way Bansal spent his MPLAD funds and in which sectors has also been enumerated. Anyone wishing to know of Bansal's views on various issues pertaining to the city including art and culture, education, entertainment, health care, poverty alleviation and technology can log on to the website.
Interestingly, blogging has also found its way into the website in order to interact with the people. The first comment posted by him titled `The Young and the Restless' deals with education facilities as well as job prospects for the youth.
Posters that would be used during campaigning are also available on the portal. Apart from defining `geri', another one targetted at the `gym-going' population states `Exercise your vote. Its good for the health of democracy'. Another page is designed like the homepage of the social networking site `Orkut' with the song Oscar-winning track `Jai Ho' playing in the background.
Councillor Arshad Khan, who has designed the website, says: "The terminology used in the website is such that the youth can relate to it and the colours are refreshing and youthful. We will soon start an opinion poll on issues affecting residents."
Bansal stated that the website is targetted at tech-savvy `generation next' and the internet plays an important part in their opinion formation.
"I will be able to stay in touch with them through the website. My daily schedule will be posted and anyone who wants to attend a public meeting or rally will get all the information about it," said Bansal.

In Self-Praise: A Poll-Minded UPA Launches An Ad Blitz
By ugesh sarkar, Section Congress on Mass Media
Posted on Mon Mar 02, 2009 at 12:09:26 AM EST
Government Hardsell
- Those in the advertising trade estimate the government spent Rs 6,000 crore last year on advertising
- It has already spent Rs 50 crore on TV ads, Rs 10 crore on print ads in the last two months, and has set aside another Rs 150 crore till the election code kicks in
- Among the big spenders are the HRD ministry which has spent close to Rs 45 crore; the civil aviation ministry has set aside Rs 40 crore while the rural development ministry has already spent Rs 25 crore and has booked ads on credit
- A corporate company's annual ad budget ranges from Rs 100-200 crore.
In a note to his cabinet colleagues on June 5, 2008, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had conveyed to them that it was their "moral duty to cut out wasteful expenditure". However, 10 days ago, an informal communication from the steering committee overseeing government publicity--comprising the media advisor to the PM; a joint secretary in the PMO; secretary, information and broadcasting; head of the Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP); and a finance ministry official--asked all ministries to publicise their achievements individually. The result: a veritable deluge of advertisments in leading dailies. The cost? The centralised publicity agency--the DAVP--pays Rs 5 lakh for a page and Rs 2,70,000 for a half-page in mainstream newspapers. Not just that, ad rates which were hiked by 20 per cent are going to be pushed up by another 10 per cent. Those in the business estimate that Rs 6,000 crore has been spent on advertising in the last one year.
At a time when corporate advertising has become thin due to the economic downturn, the government's ad spree is only welcome. Till the government let loose its ad blitz, hoardings at Marine Drive in Mumbai (which command a premium rate of Rs 7 lakh a month) were going abegging with 'To Let' signs. Not any more. The government's achievements--from the Delhi Metro to the moon mission--are splashed all across.
The media certainly isn't complaining; it is also being deemed as positive psychology for the aam admi, with not a single day in the last two months going by without an advertisement screaming progress. So, be it foundation stone-laying ceremonies, universal education, announcements of new airport terminal buildings, it's all there in bold type, with even the ministry of food processing bombarding readers about its onward march. The underlying message to all this is of course: Want the pace of progress to sustain, vote for the government.

Tech Savvy Marketing, Political Parties Adopt New Media to Communicate Their Campaign Message
By ugesh sarkar, Section Congress on Mass Media
Posted on Wed Nov 26, 2008 at 09:57:50 PM EST
A recent ASSOCHAM survey shows more than half of the working professionals in Delhi do not want to vote, but that has not stopped political parties from wooing them by using new media techniques to communicate their campaign message.
It's an hour-long ordeal for Anup jain everyday. Anup like most working professionals of the city lives in Delhi and works in Gurgaon. He covers a distance of 15 kms to his office in more than an hr everyday.
This Marketing Director of Pizza hut says just as a new pasta dish in the restaurant menu needs to be advertised and marketing is crucial to effectively sell political ideals to urban voters.
"The political parties in the fray are catching up to reaching out to working professionals. Their media sensibilities are getting better but their sensitivity around what concerns us and what really they should target us for the message is not appropriate," says Marketing Director, Pizza Hut, Anup Jain.
It might have failed to make a connect with him but for 1000s of working professionals on the move the new media campaigns by political parties is working.
"They have been sending SMS with their party sumbols to create a brand recall," Namita.
Political jingles on FM radios, MMS appeals and caller tunes on your cell phone, parties say more communication tacks will be unleashed before the Election day.
"Now you must reach out to the target audience as much as you can and in a very crisp and innovative method, in the future an alternmative to noisy political campaigning will not be deaf scilence," says Arun Jaitely.
It's campaigns hat have made this CEO of an Indo Italian consultancy firm sit up and take notice. Logging on to face book, Namita was not surprised to find a facebook group on the politicians in fray.
But all this interest still isn't taking her to the polling booth Namita like many who come to the city to build a career hasn't got her voter registration.

UPA should dismiss Maha govt immediately: Maya
By Riti, Section Congress on Mass Media
Posted on Fri Oct 31, 2008 at 01:38:25 AM EST
BSP supremo and UP chief minister Mayawati on Thursday asked Centre to dismiss of Congress-NCP Maharashtra government, charging it with failing to protect north Indians even as she trained her guns on the Bihar bigwigs in UPA for merely paying "lipservice" to the Raj Thackerayauthored violence.
Mayawati's strong attack on the Maharashtra ruling coalition -- while daring Lalu Prasad and Ram Vilas Paswan to resign from Manmohan Singh government as their voice was not being heard -- came a day after a youth from Sant Kabir Nagar was lynched in what was dubbed as another "hate crime" against North Indians in Mumbai.
The offensive from the dalit leader, while reflecting an obvious concern for a resident of the state she rules, stems from an assessment that MNS violence had a tacit support of NCP-Congress combine to weaken the tightening grip on voters of BSP and Shiv Sena.
It is felt a return of "safety concerns" as dominant theme could stop a drift of "lower class" migrant voters, who are in the Congress stable, towards BSP -- which observers say has been happening in the Mumbai region lately. At the same time, it could polarise voters along the "local vs outsider" lines in the heartland, and check a consolidation of SCs and OBCs behind the dalit outfit.
Going by the political logic, BSP, as an outfit from UP, has a direct stake in MNS-orchestrated violence not becoming serious as it could undo its four years of campaign on the ground, something which intensified since Mayawati captured power in Lucknow in May 2004.
On the contrary, observers feel the ruling coalition would gain from the MNS campaign as it would not only check the growth of BSP in whatever measure but could also push the hardline cadre from Shiv Sena to Raj's lap. The gain may offset the possible loss of Muslim votes to Congress as the minority groupsare bristling over the alleged "persecution" in the anti-terror campaign and are being wooed by Samajwadi Party.
Mayawati seems to have decided to take a leadership role to pit herself as a player in Maharashtra politics. An unambiguous stand on violence against the"outsiders", while helping consolidate her position within UP, is rooted inthe belief that BSP's mobilisation of SC/OBCs in Vidarbha and Marathwada would not be affected by the bogey raised by MNS.
While survival fears may force migrants from UP-Bihar to stay in Congress fold for lack of alternative, it may be worth gambling if a scathing accusation at Vilasrao Deshmukh could force them to take a relook at their political choice.
If BSP succeeds in bringing the Congress role under a cloud, it may saddle Congress with a negative in the Hindi heartland in coming electoral battles which would undercut its attempts at revival.
Putting the onus of ensuring constitutional rights of citizens on the Centre, Mayawati said, "UPA should immediately dismiss Maharashtra government." She said the Maharashtra CM's statement that he could not do anything to control attackers had given strength to the arsonists. She also said that silence of BJP and Congress showed that they were hand in glove.

PM Confident Of Winning UPA Coalition For The Trial Of Strength Triggered By Indo-US Nuclear Deal
By DevAshish, Section Congress on Mass Media
Posted on Wed Jul 16, 2008 at 01:01:43 AM EST
A week ahead of the Lok Sabha trust vote, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday expressed confidence that the UPA coalition would win the trial of strength triggered by the Indo-US nuclear deal which 'will in no way impinge' on India's strategic programme.
"The Prime Minister expressed confidence that the people of India understood the significance of the initiatives being taken by the UPA Government and endorse them," said a brief note issued by the PM's media advisor after Singh's meeting with senior television journalists.
In his first public comments after the Left parties withdrew support to the Government, the Prime Minister dismissed allegations by the Left and the main Opposition BJP that the IAEA safeguards agreement would compromise India's strategic programme.
"The agreement will in no way impinge on our strategic programme, which is entirely outside the purview of the IAEA safeguards agreement," he said.
Highlighting the opportunities for international cooperation in civil nuclear energy to meet the challenge of energy security and high technology development, Singh said the IAEA accord would enable India to cooperate in this sector with all the 45 members of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).
These include USA, Russia, France and China, he said adding concluding the agreements with IAEA and the NSG would end the era of nuclear apartheid against India.

Jagat Singh (Son Of Mr. natwar Singh) expelled from Congress for misconduct
By gaurav, Section Congress on Mass Media
Posted on Wed Sep 06, 2006 at 07:00:47 AM EST
Jagat Singh, who along with his father and former External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh has been indicted in the Iraqi oil-for-food scam, was today expelled from the party for indiscipline and misconduct.
Acting on the recommendations of a disciplinary committee headed by senior leader Pradhyuman Singh, the party decided to expel Jagat, the sitting MLA from Lakshmangarh, after he failed to reply to the show cause notice issued to him on August 18 when he was suspended from the party following his indictment by the Justice Pathak Authority.
Defying the show cause notice after suspension from the party on August 18, Jagat not only involved in the pro-Natwar Swabhiman rally but also openly assailed many senior Congress leaders from the dias on August 23 which was highly deplorable, PCC President Dr B.D. Kalla told reporters here.
The PCC executive committee had on August 23 approved the suspension of Jagat, and now after considering the recommendation of disciplinary committee, he was expelled, Kalla said.
He said that a letter notifying Jagat about the expulsion from the party has already been issued.
The Pathak authority had indicted Natwar Singh and Jagat for misusing their positions to favour some people close to them in procuring oil contracts from the Saddam Hussein regime in 2001.
Following their indictment, both of them were suspended from the party.

Feel The Power Of The Blogs - The Ones That congress4india.com Provides For Free!
By Sanjay Sharma, Section Congress on Mass Media
Posted on Sun Oct 31, 2004 at 06:16:50 AM EST
Editor's Note: The following article from USA Today newspaper captures the spirit of the remarkably successful "mini-newspapers" called blogs. Blogs Are Weblogs, or online electronic journals.
Congress4India.com provides you the capability to create your own blogs for free. As soon as you log in with your username and password you will see an option called "Your Diary". This is our equivalent of a blog, and anything that you put here will be visible to other users under the "Free Member Diaries " hyperlink at the top of the screen. If you don't see the Diary option just create a user account and provide an email address so that we can send the password to.
The email address does not have to be traceable to you, but just some place from where you can access the password that we send you. With the username you chose, and the password we sent, you can log into your account to access the Diaries or blogs.
Traditional news is based on what editors and producers think is important, and most of the time they get it right. But the blogs, as a whole, draw attention to what the people think is important. If a blogger reads a story about fender-bender, chances are he won't write about it. But if he reads one about a politician's disingenuous comments — maybe in a local paper, on page 6, towards the bottom — he might just say something. And if other blogs find it interesting, they'll also do that. Word spreads.
Bloggers and traditional journalists feed off each other — it can be a terrific synergy. Newspapers and TV or radio reporters often provide the blogosphere with the initial information. Bloggers then either simply link to stories of interest, or comment on them at length, or use them as the basis for their own reporting — digging up records, memos, other stories, etc. Then it's back to the traditional media. Thanks to the blogs, a smart editor or producer can see what people are interested in.
The blogs are where you find the answer to "What are people on the Net saying?" Bloggers write short pieces and long pieces. Sometimes an entry is just a link and a quip. Other times it's a lengthy and well-researched essay (with lots of links). But bloggers read one another and link to one another, creating that blogosphere — a giant spider web of connected sites. If a news item tickles any part of the web it's not long before it's felt far away. Sounds a lot like newspapers in the early days, don't it?
Not that anyone should get all their news from blogs. But they'd be just as foolish, these days, to simply rely on traditional media. Blogs have succeeded because we the people need them. We didn't know it, but we sense it. Bloggers are filling in where journalists miss. Blogs are filling a role that used to be filled by that mass media: Digging deeper into the news and offering fact-checking, perspective, and doing more than simply reporting.

PM For Close Coordination Between Government & Congress Media Department
By Sanjay Sharma, Section Congress on Mass Media

A close coordination is needed between the Government and the Congress party's Media Department to enable people know about the work being done by the ruling UPA, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said today. Singh made the suggestion while interacting with the members of the AICC Media department over lunch at his official residence here.
Later, Chairperson of the department Girija Vyas told reporters that it was an informal interaction between Singh and the department's members. Vyas said that they told the Prime Minister about the difficulties faced by the media in getting information from the Government. Asked about his response, Vyas said "it was positive." Besides her, those present at the lunch were Spokesperson Jayanti Natrajan and AICC Secretary Tom Vadakkan.
Two spokesmen Anand Sharma and Abhishek Singh could not attend as they were out of Delhi, Vyas said.

Forbes Magazine Announces That Mrs. Sonia Gandhi Is World's Third Most Powerful Woman
By Sanjay Sharma, Section Congress on Mass Media
Posted on Fri Aug 20, 2004 at 07:30:47 AM EST
NEW YORK: Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi is the world's third most powerful woman after US National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice and Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi, Forbes magazine said on Friday. US first lady Laura Bush and Senator Hillary Clinton have been placed at the fourth and fifth positon by the magazine in the list of 100 most powerful women in the world that included Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri (8) and Phillippines President Gloria Arroyo (9). (You can read the original Forbes Article at Forbes.com: Power Women).
The magazine said the list had made a refreshing break from the conventional wisdom about women and power by breaking the notion that women can only gain power by working behind the scenes and forging consensus. Forbes said it came up with the list by devising a power scorecard. "For each candidate, we came up with a numerical weight defined by her title and resume, the size of the economic sphere in which she wields power... and the number of global media mentions."
In a brief profile of the 57-year-old Gandhi, the magazine said no other woman in recent times has been more widely revered in India than her. "Gandhi made headlines in May when, after the party (Congress) she led won India's democratic elections, she declined to take over the Prime Minister's seat," it noted.
