The TNCC headquarters, Sathyamurthy Bhavan, today came alive since the Lok Sabha elections with thousands of party workers thronging the premises here, creating utter chaos, to meet up with AICC general secretary Salman Khurshid and AICC secretary K B Krishnamurthi on their visit to the city. The visit of Khurshid, who was recently entrusted with the charge of Tamilnadu and Pondicherry, is also seen as a prelude to a reshuffle in the TNCC, which is expected soon. Rumours have it that Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram is planning to merge his Congress Jananayaga Peravai with the Congress formally by the end of this month and that reshuffle may happen after that.

Though the TNCC had lined up a series of meeting since 11 a.m, starting with that of the State unit's coordination committee formed much before the elections, Khurshid arrived at the premises, bustling with waiting crowds and haphazardly parked vehicles only just before noon. Craning his neck out of the vehicle, Vasan exhorted the crowd to give way but it will not. So they all walked to the porch and to the meeting hall.

After the meeting with the coordination committee members, Khurshid was scheduled to meet other leaders in batches. MP, ex-MPs, MLAs, ex-MLAs and AICC and PCC members in one group, district presidents and ex-presidents in another. Former office-bearers, Mahila workers, youths, students, SC/STs, minorities and leaders of local bodies are the other groups that he has to meet before leaving by 6 p.m. In between, he will also meet the media.

Escorted to the premises by TNCC president G K Vasan, the visiting dignitaries had to walk up to the portals of the building from a distance since the surging crowds of party workers and functionaries will not let their vehicle drive up to the porch. In the process, Khurshid trampled on the feelings of half a score of old Seva Dal workers, both men and women, waiting in the hot sun since 10 a.m, the expected arrival time of the dignitaries. The men and women in white had geared up for a guard of honour but Khurshid, as he was swept by the sea of party workers and functionaries, could not take that honour, much to their consternation.

The visit by Khurshid has come as a sort of rejuvenation for the party in Tamilnadu, which saw no political activity happening after it was elected to power at the Centre. Plagued by factionalism, leaders and workers of the groups opposing Vasan never turned up at the headquarters for any thing and even the supporters of the TNCC president did not have much to do.
