MARCH 8:
  • Congress decided to postpone the rally scheduled for March 14, 2005 to avoid a possible chaotic situation in Jharkhand ahead of the trust vote on March 15, 2005. “Keeping in mind the Governor’s address to the Assembly on March 14 and the trust vote the next day, the Congress has decided to postpone the rally,” JPCC spokesman Sailesh Sinha said on Tuesday.
  • Meanwhile, JMM said that it would launch a state-wide agitation, beginning Wednesday to “expose” how the BJP had “hijacked democratic norms.” “The BJP-led NDA looted the state exchequer during the last four years. Now they are applying all illegal methods to remain in power so that corruption committed by them should not be uncovered,” JMM general secretary Sunil Mahto said on Tuesday.

Jharkhand: The other ugly face ignored by media? (none / 0) (#1)
by Kumar on Wed Mar 09, 2005 at 11:51:39 AM EST
The media has played a commendable role in exposing the evident partisan role of the Jharkhand governor in inviting Soren to form government in an apparent hurry. The impact of this meadia pressure will surely be seen in the coming days where anyone will think twice before doing anything that can be seen as a misuse of constitutional authority.
There is however a second aspect that the media has a significant role to play too. Among the five independent MLAs being detained by BJP and kept cutoff from their leaders, there are those who fought their entire lifetime against the ideology of the BJP. Their party heads are openly extending support to UPA. There are those fought elections on alliance with UPA constituents. The media needs to do so reporting and investigation into the background/political agenda of these MLAs and alliances on which they fought elections. This brings some pressure on those who are indulging in illegitimate force to make elected MLA stand by them. Being independents they do not have sufficient party protection as well. They need media support.

In a NDTV debate, Mr. MM Joshi has been saying that their fight is see that not to overturn the mandate of crores of Jharkandis. One may ask, what mandate he is talking about. The UPA has gone through more than 5 levels of split in their vote base. And yet NDA has barely a MLA more which itself is highly suspicious. It is possible that governor may have taken into account the political agenda and background of the independent MLAs. It is even possible that being a ex-congress politician he may have tired to be partisan on behalf of thre UPA. While the governors actions is indeed questionable, and the opposition has every right to protest. However, it is equally inappropriate to invoke the religious affiliation of the governor and calling his a "supari killer" and putting up a hypocritic face (conveniently forgetting the numerous cases of misuse of governors office of NDA regime).
In any case, it is in the interest of the country that the PM should live up to his reputation of integrity and courage and take necessary steps to make sure that misuse of public offices  do not happen.
