Sheila Dikshit Roped In Sonia To Boost Delhi Govt's Image For The Coming Assembly Elections

The Sheila Dikshit Government has roped in United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi to launch an insurance scheme for auto-taxis drivers to give a boost to its electoral prospects in the coming Assembly elections. The scheme would be launched on August 20.

The scheme will be launched with the help of Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry and Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL).

The officials of Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry and Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) on Tuesday made a presentation before Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and her two Ministers - Ashok Kumar Walia and Haroon Yusuf on the insurance scheme. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Murli Deora were also present in the meeting.

Under the scheme, the insurance covers worth Rs 1.50 lakh to be provided to CNG auto rickshaw, taxi and goods vehicle drivers. The scheme provides accident risk cover worth Rs 1.50 lakh to CNG auto driver while driving. Beside this, if they have two children, they would get insurance of Rs 25,000 for their education. Drivers of all auto rickshaws, taxi and good vehicles running on CNG would be eligible to get insurance cover under the scheme.

The objective of the scheme is to promote the use of CNG instead of diesel. In case of any mishap, the nominee would get Rs 1.50 lakh. The Union Ministry has estimated that there are one-lakh auto-taxis drivers in Delhi would be benefited from the scheme.

The Union Petroleum Ministry had asked Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) and Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) to introduce a scheme for providing insurance cover to CNG auto rickshaw drivers in Delhi. "A few days back, IGL Managing Director Rajesh Vedvyas met Dikshit to this effect and appraised the details of the scheme," the sources said.

In Mumbai, under the 'Mahasuraksha' insurance scheme all taxi and auto drivers driving CNG-powered vehicles is being covered against death or permanent disability arising out of accident caused while driving such vehicles.

Reacting on the scheme, a Delhi Government official said that this would help to encourage more people to switch over to CNG mode of transport. Expressing to improve the tally in the Assembly polls, a Congress leader said that over one-lakh drivers would be benefited and they may play an important role in the elections. "The scheme is intended to benefit family of under privileged section of the society," he said. Delhi BJP president Harshvardhan said that the scheme is nothing more than election stunt.
