AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi has convened the UP coordination committee meeting by month-end to formulate a strategy for the 2012 Assembly polls in the state.

The meeting, which is likely to be held on November 28, will coincide with his tour of central UP districts to boost the ongoing Indian Youth Congress membership drive, said sources.

Mr Gandhi, who has set his eyes on establishing a Congress government in UP in 2012, is expected to sharpen the party’s future strategy and give clear directions to the state leaders to prepare for the big electoral battle against the ruling BSP.

"We are going to pitch for a Congress government in UP in 2012. We have already started working on the strategies," said AICC general secretary and state in-charge Digvijay Singh.

Though the party is buoyed after its recent bypoll victories in the Firozabad Lok Sabha and Lucknow West Assembly seats, the Amethi MP will look into the reasons behind the Congress coming second in the other Assembly seats, especially Padrauna, Jhansi and Powayan, supervised by three central ministers.

Sources said though the twin victories in the UP bypolls have indicted a voter churning in favour of the Congress, the grand old party is aware of the political challenges in UP and the hard work it needs to put to attract a wider spectrum of people in the state.

"An analysis of the bypoll results where the party fared second will be given to the AICC general secretary," said a senior Congress functionary. Political analysts said while the 2009 general elections saw the Muslim vote from the SP camp and upper caste vote from the BJP fold shifting towards the Congress, of late, a sizeable section of the non-jatav dalit vote bank from the BSP too has returned to the grand old party.
