Sultry weather did not hold back the electorates of Mohali and Kharar who turned out in good numbers on Wednesday to elect their parliamentarian from the Anandpur Sahib Lok Sabha seat. Of the total 1,64,127 voters in Mohali, 63 per cent polled their votes while 65 per cent of the 1,59,377 voters in Kharar Assembly segment exercised their franchise.

Even as 14 candidates are in the fray for the seat, the contest is being majorly seen as a face-off between Ravneet Singh Bittu of the Congress and Dr Daljit Singh Cheema of the SAD.

The turnout, however, could be higher as at several polling booths, long queues of voters were seen even after 5 pm. In view of the hot weather, the polling staffers had been asked to allow all those who report till end time, to cast their votes.

"With polling process still on at many polling booths even after the scheduled time of 5 pm, the actual voter turnout figure is expected to be compiled late in the night," said Deputy Commissioner Prabhjot Singh Mand.

Even as polling started at 7 am, a dismal 9 and 10 per cent voter turnout was recorded in the first two hours in Kharar and Mohali respectively.

The two areas, however, improved on the turnout by afternoon when voters polled in the majority, taking the percentage to 54 and 49 Mohali, per cent respectively in the two areas around 3 pm.

In the 2007 Assembly elections, the Kharar Assembly constituency, of which Mohali was then part, had recorded 69.54 per cent polling.

More enthusiasm was recorded among the rural voters as they began lining up at booths from 7 am as against their urban counterparts, who turned out in the majority after almost four hours.

Even with cases of minor clashes, skirmishes and complaints of bogus voting reported, polling remained largely peaceful.

Deputy Commissioner Prabhjot Singh Mand and Senior Superintendent of Police Jatinder Singh Aulakh confirmed that no untoward incident or major violation was reported from any part of the district.

In Kharar, a technical snag in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) caused polling to start late in three polling booths 90 minutes (Tagore Niketan School), 30 minutes (Government School Desumajra) and 20 minutes (Arya School).
