West Bengal goes to polls tomorrow in the second of the-phased polls in the state amid a heightened political tension and a stricter security vigil.

In all, 2,16,99,782 voters will exercise their franchise in a total of 27,170 polling booths to decide the fate of 134 candidates of different political parties, contesting from 17 constituencies.

With polling being over in 14 of the state's 42 constituencies on April 30, the seats at stake this time are Jangipur, Baharampur, Krishnagar, Ranaghat, Howrah, Uluberia, Serampore, Hooghly, Arambagh, Tamluk, Contai, Bardhaman East, Bardhaman-Durgapur, Asansol, Bolpur and Birbhum.

Jangipur in Murshidabad district is under spotlight as, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee is defending his seat.

Also in the fray are state Animal Resources Minister Anisur Rahaman (CPI-M), making debut in Lok Sabha polls in Murshidabad, Adhir Chowdhury, a Congress strongman, seeking re-election from Baharmapur for the third time, former Union Minister Satyabrata Mukherjee (BJP), ace runner Jyotirmoyee Sikdar(CPI-M) and Bengali screen hero Tapas Paul(Trinamool Congress) from Krishnagar, Veteran Lok Sabha members Hannan Molla and Rupchand Pal(both CPI-M) respectively from Uluberia and Hooghly, controversial CPI(M) MP Laxman Seth from Tamluk and film actress Shatabdi Roy (Trinamool Congress) from Birbhum.

The Election Commission has decided to deploy lathi-weilding homeguards to assist the armed personnel in the polling booths spread across the 17 Parliamentary constituencies.

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Debasish Sen said almost all the polling premises would be manned by armed forces to be helped by the homeguards.

Moreover, he said homeguards were of two types - temporary and regular, and the latter was imparted armed training and could be deputed with ''all confidence.''

''Though it is not possible to provide armed police in all the polling booths, the EC sees to it that the polling centres are guarded by them, as many as possible,'' the CEO said.

He informed that in all 215 companies of Central forces were being pressed into service in the booths while homeguards would be pressed into service to assist the armed personnel.

The EC took the decision following allegation of the Opposition Congress and Trinamool Congress that inadequate security helped CPI(M) to go for malpractices in many booths in the first phase of election, held on April 30. The CEO said 7627 micro observers would oversee the poll process in the booths and had been entrusted with the task of pointing out to electoral or other faults, if any.

He informed that 1870 digital and 1786 video cameras would be placed in the sensitive and super-sensitive booths to point out any irregularity.

''The EC is committed to making the second phase Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal totally peaceful and hence is adopting all necessary measures required to ensure foolproof security,'' the CEO observed.

Sen also assured that the EVMs, selected for the polls, had been tested by ECIL experts and these could not be tampered with.

While Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee called upon the people to ''come out with whatever they can lay their hands on to resist CPI(M)'s rigging on the election day,'' a section of Opposition leaders even threatened to disrupt the poll process if the booths were not manned by paramilitary personnel.

During polling in the first phase, altogether 220 companies of Central forces were deployed in 14 constituencies that went to polls, 119 companies being earmarked for the Maoist-dominated areas of Purulia, Bankura and West Midnapore alone.

The CEO has also assured of a heavier concentration of para military personnel this time to thwart maoist attacks.

Decrying Banerjee for 'instigating' the people, Left Front Chairman Biman Basu alleged that the Trinamool Congress leader was trying to whip up anarchy and cautioned the people against any attempt to satotage the poll process.
While the battlelines have been drawn between two rival allied forces, the ruling Left Front and Trinamool Congress-Congress combine, heading for a real showdown are the Front leader CPI(M) and the Trinamool Congress, the main Opposition in the state.
