Going to the polls in the fourth phase, Ghaziabad and Gautam Budh Nagar Lok Sabha constituencies, formed after delimitation, recorded less than 50 per cent voting.

With a huge presence of security forces in polling stations, voting was peaceful. Gautam Budh Nagar recorded 47.3 percentage of voting whereas, Ghaziabad recorded voting of 46.4.

Beating the heat, more senior citizens than young people were seen at the polling centres casting their votes.

Asgari, a 90-year-old woman, came out around 11 am to cast her vote. Claiming that she has been a consistent voter for the past many years in Piplada village, Asgari said, "I vote because it gives us the right to question the candidate on development issues. I have been voting ever since I came to this village."

Asgari was not the only one braving the afternoon heat. Vachan Singh a visually challenged septuagenarian, forced his grandson to bring him to the polling centre.

"I never miss voting. This is the only way I can ensure that the children of my village have a better future. I am hopeful that someone will change the world for us," said the villager who cast his vote in Azad Inter Memorial College, Dasna.

Tarikat, another voter, came on a wheel chair despite the bumpy brick road. "Fifteen years ago, I met with an accident and injured my spine. It left me wheel-chair bound. This does not stop me from encouraging youths in my village to vote," said the 50-year-old.

There were a few who waited for hours to vote for their favourite candidate. Virendra, who lives in the same neighbourhood as Congress candidate and Sitting MP, Surendra Prakash Goyal, had misplaced her voter I-card and was not allowed to vote. She returned with her husband, his voter I-card and ration card.

"I had to wait for almost three hours before I was allowed to vote though I showed them other proofs and my name was in the voting list," she added.

In Badalpur, Gautam Budh Nagar, the hometown of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, the voting percentage was low. All houses in the village had put up BSP flags.

"Only 200 people come out to vote till 12 pm. There is no excitement as the village has not seen infrastructure development despite Mayawati being the chief minister," said a villager.
