The AICC's state election authority today set a July date for the Assam PCC organisational elections, ending months of speculations about the Congress going to the hustings next year with an "ad hoc" body.

AICC members S. Ahmed and Jagdish Thakral, who represented the three-member state election authority at the meeting, announced the schedule before the District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents at Rajiv Bhawan here. State election authority chairman S. Chopra, could not make it to the meeting.

Accordingly, booth committee elections will be held on July 5, block committee elections on July 10 while DCC polls on July 21.

Though the date for the election of the PCC president has not yet been fixed, the process is likely to be completed within July 31, Thakral said, an observation shared by incumbent PCC president Bhubaneswar Kalita.

Kalita is currently heading the "ad hoc" body though his three-year term ended in 2008.

PCC sources said the July deadline to get the process completed was a welcome move, as it would give ample time to the newly elected president to plan for the high-stakes Assembly polls.

They said the contenders for the PCC's president post would become clear after the DCC polls are over.

However, the sources said incumbent president Kalita enjoyed an edge given the "successful" manner in which he had run the party in elections and "activated" the party at the booth level and seen membership swell to 9.62 lakh from 3 lakh in 2005, the year he took charge.

"Kalita is a favourite as on day but it is the high command which will take a call on the coveted post. The effort is to ensure unanimity to keep our flock together in the run-up to the polls. However, the presence of two members of the state election authority and their announcement reflected the seriousness of the central leadership to hold the polls," a source said.

Towards the smooth conduct of the process, the APCC has directed DCC presidents to liase with the co-ordinators to clear doubts, if any. PCC secretaries will be appointed co-ordinators.

The APCC has also moved the schedule for clearance by the AICC's central election authority led by Oscar Fernandes.
